Sample Roulette: Vacation Edition

Well, I’m back.

We had an amazing trip. One that was far too full of fun to spend time doing whiskey tastings. Well, almost. I did happen to toss a few blind samples in my bag to try. I was on a fun adventure and these little bottles had the possibility of being very adventurous.

I mean, these were samples that I had poured from 2011 until 2017 during my “hoarding phase” of whiskey fandom. During that time, I kept samples of everything I bought. It didn’t matter if it was a limited edition or a $10 handle. All of them had a sample poured and stashed in a little box. Last year I realized I no longer wanted to keep them and started to drink them. I’d covered the original labels with painters tape in order to make them blind, just because it was more fun that way.

So while we sat in my room that overlooked the shores of Lake Powell, planning the next day’s adventure, we took a little time to have a little whiskey adventure as well. Let’s see what I brought with and if any of it was as good (or as bad) as I remember.

Blind Whiskey Sample # 1:

Nose: Corn, toffee, and a mineral note.

Mouth: Spicy, Cinnamon, Cardamom, and a delicate fruit note.

Finish: Hot and Spicy. Notes of cinnamon and cardamom.

Pre-Reveal Thoughts: I really like the spice of this one. My wife doesn't like cardamom so she isn't as big of a fan. That means I will get the rest of this pour. Yay!

Reveal: George Dickel 14-year-old private Select

Post-Reveal Thoughts: The bottle that this sample came from was purchased at a grocery store near New Orleans back in 2014. I remember it being very good and I still found it so. This makes me very excited to crack into the bottle of the 15-year-old Dickel that I found in Colorado on this trip.

Blind Whiskey Sample # 2:

Nose: Floral mint, brown sugar, and cherry.

Mouth: Cherry, brown sugar, cocoa, and nutmeg

Finish: Medium in length and warmth. Notes of cherry, nutmeg, and mint.

Pre-Reveal Thoughts: This is really good. I'm feeling like this might be a really good Canadian Whisky. It has a mouthfeel that, while not thin, is on the thinner side. Good sweetness.

Reveal: Jefferson's Presidential Select, 18-year-old

Post-Reveal Thoughts: When I first reviewed this, I wasn’t a fan. I found it too woody and stated I wasn’t a fan of bourbon with an emphasis on wood notes. I guess I have mellowed with age when it comes to that particular flavor note because it didn’t even show up in my notes seven years later when I did this tasting. Interesting.

Blind Whiskey Sample # 3:

Nose: Dried grain and spearmint

Mouth: Thin mouthfeel, dried grain, spearmint, lots of cinnamon, and sugar sweetness.

Finish: Warm, but not too warm. More dried grain and cinnamon.

Pre-Reveal Thoughts: This is pretty meh. Probably won't be finishing this one. Vacation is too short to spend time on meh whiskey.

Reveal: Old Fitzgerald Prime.

Post-Reveal Thoughts: I don’t have much to add to that statement. I put this one away back in 2014 and gave it a meh then. I still think it’s pretty meh.

I always find this to be a fun exercise. You never know when you are going to put something truly terrible in your mouth and it makes every pour a little more exciting when the product is good. And this round we got two likes and a meh. Not bad for three shots in the dark.

2020 Whiskey Holiday Gift Sets

It should come as no surprise that I am a frugal fella. After all, I’ve been married to an accountant for over 25 years. I doubt we would have made it this long if I didn’t tend to pinch pennies. It’s in light of this innate penny pinching that I tend to wander through the Holiday Gift Set aisles of my closest Total Wine.

I mean, I like free stuff. Especially free stuff that comes along with things I might have purchased anyway. And, of course, I did pick up one or two of those gift sets.

But it made me think, “my readers are pretty frugal folks too; I bet they also like free stuff.” And so this post was born. I reached out to my PR contacts to ask one question: “What free things are you giving away with your whiskey this year?” Between the responses to those emails and my own “research” in local liquor stores, I’ve compiled a list of Holiday Gift Sets to keep an eye out for. This is by no means a complete list as some of the companies dind’t respond.

Maker’s Mark

Let’s start with the one that inspired the question. I didn’t get a response to my question from Maker’s, but I found this lovely gift set at Total Wine for $21.99. It includes a 750 mL bottle of Maker’s Mark and two glasses with the Maker’s logo and a “Christmas Sweater” pattern etched into the glass.

Maker’s 46

Maker’s 46 is including a 750 mL bottle of Maker’s 46 and a “Limited Edition” bottle stopper featuring the Maker’s “S IV Star” logo. I’m not sure how useful this item will be, but it is pretty. And might be a fun conversation starter on your home bar. Total Wine is currently selling this for $25.99 in my area.

Four Roses Small Batch

Four Roses is packaging two rose-shaped ice molds along with their Small Batch Bourbon this Holiday season. It is only available in select states but should cost you about the same as a bottle of Small Batch without the gifts (roughly $29.99-$34.99). I kinda wish this was in my area. I can see myself playing with these a time or two before trying to adapt them to a directional freezing set-up...because I’m both a Four Roses fanboy and a tinkerer.

Ezra Brooks

Ezra Brooks is giving you the complete “on the rocks” experience by including an ice mold and a rocks glass along with a 750 mL bottle of their 90 proof Ezra Brooks. I haven’t seen this one locally, but they say it should cost you the same amount as Ezra Brooks would ordinarily. I like that glass (can you tell I have a thing for glasses? You can blame my wife for that.)

Crown Royal Whisky Tasting Calendar

While this isn’t a bottle with free goodies, it is a fun experience for those who like Crown and flavored Crown. This would be perfect for someone like my brother who isn’t a spirits drinker, but likes to take a bottle of Crown Apple out to the ice-fishing shack with him. This would give him four whiskeys that he would probably already like and might entice him to try the other two, that he probably wouldn’t buy on his own. This one is available nationally and MSRP is $44.99.

Crown Royal

This one wasn’t confirmed by the PR people, but I did see it on the shelf this year. It is a 750 mL bottle of Crown Royal and two rocks glasses with the Crown Royal logo on them. My Total Wine has this for $21.99.

Jack Daniel’s Holiday Countdown Calendar

Another one that is less about the "goodies” and more about the experience. Jack Daniel’s was generous enough to send this one over so that I could photograph it myself…and yeah, drink it too. According to the press release:

“The limited-edition calendar features 24 windows designed to reveal a special Jack Daniel’s item on each day leading up the December holidays, making it a perfect gift for whiskey lovers or the centerpiece of a new seasonal tradition. “Surprise” products featured in this year’s calendar include four 50ml bottles each of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, three bottles each of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple, and two bottles each of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye, Gentleman Jack and Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select. The calendar will also contain premium items, including four shot glasses with various logos from the Jack Daniel’s family of brands.“

This one isn’t available near me but where it is, its suggested retail price will be $79.99.

Jack Daniel’s

Once again, this one was not confirmed by the PR people, but it has a 2020 copyright on it, so I think it is current. If you like yourself a highball made using Jack Daniel’s (whether that is a Jack and Coke or a Jack and something else) then you’ll want to be on the lookout for this one. My Total Wine is selling it for $18.99.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel

I really have no idea if this is from this year. I suspect it may be overstock from last holiday season since it was on an endcap in the Rum section of my local Total Wine. (I took all these photos at Total Wine because they are busy enough that they don’t look sideways at a guy taking images of their stock without buying it.) This one comes with a large “Snifter” sized Glencairn glass with which to enjoy your single barrel of Jack Daniel’s. I’m not personally a fan of Glencairn glasses for drinking whiskey as I prefer the feel of a rocks glass or this one would have come home with me too.

Woodford Reserve

I suspect that this one is also overstock. I didn’t get a response from the Woodford Reserve folks about what they were doing this year, but I know this is the same as last year. I know that because last year, I bought two of them. I bought two because this box only comes with a single glass. But it is a very nice glass and I wanted more than one. It’s one I’ve reached for many times for my evening nightcap. It feels fancy.

So there you have it. These are the ones that you might find on your local shelves this year. I love these things. Mostly because I love whiskey memorabilia almost as much I like whiskey. I sometimes even buy the memorabilia without buying the whiskey. But usually only in a gift shop or an antique store.

Oh, and I did get responses from the folks who handle Jim Beam Small Batch Collection, Old Forester, and Barton/Buffalo Trace that they would not be doing any holiday gift sets this year. Just so that you are aware. Anything else that I missed, is either because it isn’t for sale near me or the PR folks never responded or both. But, that’s ok. This was long enough anyway. I hope you all had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving and that you aren’t getting too many Black Friday emails.

George Dickel Bottled in Bond No. 2 (2020 release)

Time is a crazy thing right now. As I was deciding what to talk about tonight, I said to my wife “I don’t know what to say, it’s been a year since I wrote something.”

Yeah. Obviously, it’s only been a week. But like I said time is crazy right now for everyone. I heard someone say recently “you know four, five years ago back in 2019.” I’ve also heard the time since the pandemic started described as “the fastest decade of my life.” And both of these felt right to me. The time seems to be simultaneously flying by and taking forever to pass.

But no matter how long ago it feels like, last year George Dickel introduced a new product. The initial George Dickel Bottled in Bond was a 13-year-old bonded whiskey, distilled in Fall 2005. It was released to great acclaim, becoming Whisky Advocate’s 2019 “Whisky of the Year.” It was also pretty impossible to find. At least here in Minnesota. And since I’ve been off the Diageo sample list for a while now—maybe because I gave a poor review to the Dickel Tobasco and most of the Orphan Barrels, maybe because I publically said I couldn’t endorse Bulleit anymore, I literally don’t know—I never got my hands on one.

Anyway, I was pretty stoked when I walked into my local corner liquor store and saw the blue bottle sitting on one of the lower shelves. The Dickel releases that I’ve liked best have been higher proof and higher age. And 100 proof and now 11-years-old seemed like it would fit the bill pretty well.

George Dickel Bottled in Bond No. 2

Purchase Info: $37.99 for a 750 mL bottle at Viking Liquor, Prior Lake, MN

Price per Drink (50mL): $2.53

Details: 11 years old. 50% ABV. Fall 2008 distilling season.

Nose: Cotton candy, cherry, caramel, baking spice, and a mineral note.

Mouth: Sweet with a nice tingle. Caramel, cherry, cinnamon, clove, and oak.

Finish: Medium length and heat. Strong notes of cinnamon and dusty oak.

Thoughts: Let's just say that between the time I did the tasting and now, I ran back to the store and bought two more of these. It isn't a once in a lifetime kind of whiskey by any stretch of the imagination but it is a step up from a daily drinker. And at $40 per bottle, the price reflects that.

I.W. Harper: Revisited

It has been one thousand, eight hundred and six days since I last reviewed I.W. Harper. It was right after the brand was brought back to the US. I’d just found a sealed 1960s/70s dusty in an antique store and had fallen in love with it. I was cautiously optimistic that, though different, it would be as good as the old one. Oh, the naivety I showed. Here are my thoughts from the 2015 review:

Thoughts: Very disappointing. The nose was light, fruity and delicate. The mouth was flat and full of wood. When I first nosed it I thought I was getting one whiskey. I ended up getting another that I didn't like as much. As far as quality, this is a solid meh. It's not terrible, but for almost $30 you expect something more than a mixer. I'd give this one a pass.

Earlier this year, I was finally making a list of the things I had reviewed, I realized that I hadn’t purchased this one since that initial review. I had no idea if it had gotten better, worse, stayed the same. And so I bought it again. Let’s see how things have progressed.

I. W. Harper: Revisited

Purchase Info: I lost the receipt as I bought this back before the Pandemic hit, but I bought it at Total Wine in Burnsville, MN and it currently sells there for $28.49 for a 750 mL bottle.

Price per Drink (50 mL): $1.90

Details: 41% ABV

Nose: Mint, sweet cherry, and oak.

Mouth: Cinnamon, almond, nutmeg, mint, oak

Finish: Medium length and dry. Lingering notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, mint, and oak.

Thoughts: I had to do a double-take when I looked at the proof just now. This does not taste like a proof in the low 80s. It has too much flavor, especially spice for that. I was impressed before, but I’m even more impressed now.

So, I’m not sure if I changed or if I.W. Harper changed in the last five-ish years. Either way, I like this so much more than I did when it first came out. The mouthfeel isn’t thin, the spice is very prominent and there is just enough oak to keep me happy without being overwhelming. And to top it off, it is still under $30. Good enough to enjoy neat, but cheap enough to use in a cocktail. I’ve upgraded this one to a like.

George Dickel Barrel Select

And so, here we are. I’m at the end of my long overdue run through the George Dickel line of whiskeys. Well, except for the Bottled in Bond, which doesn’t seem to be distributed to Minnesota or any of its neighboring states. And also for the unaged Dickel version which, let’s be fair, I’m probably not doing unless someone else is buying.

I probably shouldn’t say this, but if anyone really wants me to review that one, reach out. If I can find it, and you Venmo me the money, I’ll do it. I just really don’tr want to spend my own money on something I’m unlikely to drink. (Shit, I probably shouldn’t have said that. The last thing I need is for someone to buy me a bracket’s worth of TerraPure as a prank.)

Anyway back to the topic at hand. George Dickel Barrel Select. This was honestly the first Dickel I bought. I bought it long enough ago that I was still posting photos of every new bourbon purchase to Twitter because I still had faith in humanity and still used Twitter as more than glorified advertising. I’m guessing it was in the 2010/2011 timeframe. I didn’t remember liking it. The Dickel, not the Twitter. Well, not enough to buy it in the decade or so since.

But there is a funny thing about a length of time that long. Palates evolve. There are whiskeys I liked 10 years ago, that I no longer like nearly as much (seems this also applies to Twitter). And tonight, I’m going to see if the inverse is also true. George Dickel Barrel Select is the “finest whiskey” that Dickel offers. Well, if you believe their website that is. I’ll let them get their say before I jump in with my thoughts:

Our very finest whisky, for the truly discerning whisky drinker. Only 10 barrels are hand-selected by our Distiller for this small-batch handcrafted whisky. Aged between 10 and 12 years. Charcoal mellowing and our unique aging process form a smooth, premium whisky that stands in a class all by itself. A perfectly balanced, rich and silky taste with hints of vanilla, spice and charcoal.

George Dickel Barrel Select

Purchase Info: $42.99 for a 750 mL bottle at Blue Max, Burnsville, MN

Price per Drink (50mL): $2.87

Details: 43% ABV. Made from 10 bottle batches. The website says it ranges from 10-12 years old.

Nose: Almond, grapefruit, wintergreen, white sugar.

Mouth: Almond, caramel, baking spice, oak, and a light mineral note.

Finish: Medium and gentle on the finish with minimal burn. Lingering sweet caramel, dry oak, mineral, and almond notes.

Thoughts: I was underwhelmed by this during my “official” tasting in a Glencairn glass. I wasn’t getting any of the oak notes that I was expecting from a whiskey that was as old as they say this is. My initial notes say that it was mellow and sweet with a good flavor. I still agree with that but a different day, or a different glass, has allowed me to notice the dry oak notes that I hadn’t noticed on the first go-round. The heat seems to be better too. I’ll officially give this a rating of “like” since I really like it. After the first tasting, I wasn’t nearly as positive on it. Goes to show what multiple tastes will do.

For a little behind-the-scenes info, this is why I like to take multiple passes on a whiskey, in different types of glassware, before reviewing it. The first tasting, the Glencairn one, is basically the first draft. We get a broad outline, but subsequent drinks and tastings help refine the notes and add things that were missed. If you see a small sample bottle in the photo, you can be sure that the notes and thoughts are based solely on the first draft. If you see a bigger bottle, then we’ve had the chance to do a full review of the product.

George Dickel Rye Whiskey

Damn, I’m tired.

I’m not sure if you noticed this, but I am a wonderful husband. So much so that I took today “off” from work in order to build my wife a permanent fence around her garden. Well, start building anyway. This is going to be a much bigger job than I had anticipated when I told her that my building this was her Mother’s Day present. Today I used an auger to dig 14 two-foot holes and put in 14 posts. If I had good soil, it probably wouldn’t have taken as long (or been nearly as hard) but I live on clay. Very wet clay.

The good news is that if I ever decide to get into pottery, I have all I would ever need just a few inches below the surface of my yard.

Luckily for me, my wife is an amazing wife too. As I finished cleaning up and sat down to write, a Sazerac magically appeared at hand. She decided that I needed to have a post-work cocktail. And knowing what I was writing about tonight, she used that.

George Dickel Rye is the whiskey that made me realize that I’d never reviewed most of the Dickel lineup. I seriously thought I had. I bought it right after it came out for the express purpose of reviewing it. It was an era when most of the rye coming out was from MGP. This probably was as well, though I doubt anyone actually admitted as much. But I remember that the word on the street was that they bought it fully aged and then ran it through charcoal. Kinda the opposite of the Lincoln County process that Dickel usually uses.

But I wanted to see what the filtering did to the product. At the time, I really didn’t notice much and I’ve bought it as a cocktail rye off and on since. And yes, the entire time, I thought I had reviewed it. So here I am finally making up for lost time and letting you know what I think of one of my rotating cocktail ryes (I guess that might be a hint right there).

George Dickel Rye Whiskey

Purchase Info: $24.99 for a 750 mL bottle at Village Liquors, Prior Lake, MN

Price per Drink (50 mL): $1.67

Details: 95% Rye whiskey mash. 45% ABV. Filtered through maple charcoal.

Nose: Cedar, mint, hints of brown sugar.

Mouth: Brown sugar, mint, cedar.

Finish: Gentle and on the shorter end of medium length. Notes of mint, baking spice, and a hint of maple.

Thoughts: I like this one as a cocktail rye. It has a lot of the typical 95% Rye-Style flavor notes but is just a bit sweeter than I like my rye to be when I sip on it. I really like it in an Old Fashioned or Sazerac though.

OK. Now. I am off to take my second shower of the day because, honestly, I stink.

George Dickel No. 12

Last month I did an audit of all of the posts I’ve done in the last eight years of doing this site and I realized that there’s one glaring omission. Dickel. It turns out that I’ve really only done a couple of Dickel releases. The 9- and 14-year-old private barrels from back in the day, the Dickel number 8, and Dickel Tabasco.

I did the Tabasco version before I did the number 12, the Barrel Select, or the rye. The Tabasco! Now to be fair they sent me the Tabasco Dickel, but still. For shame!

Well, I’m going to right at least one of those wrongs tonight. (Another will be coming soonish since I have it in the closet ready to go.)

George Dickel No. 12

Purchase Info: $25.99 for a 750 mL bottle at Blue Max in Burnsville, MN

Details: Non-age stated. 45% ABV

Nose: Cinnamon, orange peel, and chewable vitamins.

Mouth: Caramel, vanilla, spice. Has a nice heat to it.

Finish: Medium length with lingering notes cinnamon, mint and chewable vitamins.

Thoughts: I can not believe that with as much whiskey as I buy for this site, I've never had this before. I've been missing out! If you like, or can at least get past, the chewable vitamin notes (which I personally enjoy) then this is a very tasty "everyday" whiskey. And one that I need to start grabbing more often.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

This is my favorite holiday of the year. I love the spooky theme of all the decorations. I love jack-o-lanterns. I love seeing the little kids in their costumes. And, I love the candy. 

Way back in college, I used to love the parties and the costumes too. But these days, I'm more grown-up. I sit at home, hand out candy to the few kids brave enough to head around the neighborhood, and watch a spooky movie. 

You wouldn't think I would be as happy for Halloween to get here as I am. Ignoring the calendar, before Halloween, it's Autumn. And even though I hate winter, I love Autumn. I love the crisp mornings with the hint of a warm afternoon. I love the fact that, on occasion, I can still get away with shorts and a t-shirt while doing lawn work. The idea that even if you get snow, it probably won't last. But after Halloween, it's winter. November in Minnesota means you are more likely to need a snow shovel than you are shorts. 

But in spite of all of that. In spite of the fact that it'll feel more like winter tomorrow than it does today, I still love Halloween. It feels good to indulge my inner child for one night and eat pizza, candy and drink some bourbon (though my inner child is probably too young for bourbon).

And that leads me to the most Halloween appropriate bourbon I think I’ve ever had. In line with San Diego ComicCon and the sudden end of The Walking Dead Comic, Diageo has released a tie-in bourbon. Now because of a lifelong irrational fear of zombies (George Romero’s films did a real number on me when I was about 10 years too young to be watching his movies), I’ve only read the first issue of the comic and have never seen the show. But I assume that there is some logical reason to do a tie in with a bourbon to the show, but in any case, I’m not here to judge the marketing. I’m here to taste the bourbon.

The Walking Dead Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Purchase Info: This sample bottle was graciously provided by Diageo for review purposes. Suggested Retail price is $34.99 for a 750mL bottle.

Price Per Drink (50ml): $2.33

Details: 47% ABV.

Nose: Cherry cough drops, mint, cinnamon sugar

Mouth: Cinnamon, mint, cherry

Finish: Warm and of medium length. Lingering mint, cinnamon, and cherry.

Thoughts: This is a fun novelty Bourbon. It's Halloween and I know I'll be having this in my glass for the rest of the night tonight just on the fun factor alone. But even beyond the novelty factor, this is a decent Bourbon. Not a world-beater by any stretch of the imagination, but if I tasted it in the store, I'd be bringing it home because it is decent and fun. And isn't tonight supposed to be fun anyway?
